Topic: RedGear 0.9.2 - Prerelease Available to Public

Many have expressed their desire to purchase RedGear, even though development is incomplete. Therefore, RedGear v0.9.2 is now available for public purchase, subject to IMPORTANT TERMS & CONDITIONS:

  • RedGear v0.9.2 works on HPC2000 ARM devices only. Support for most devices is planned for v1.0, but no other devices are supported in this release.

  • Opera 8.65 support is not 100% with v0.9.2, but testers have concluded that it is still acceptable (or even good) for browsing. These quirks and possible workarounds are detailed in this post.

  • Running Opera is the primary target of this release. Other software may work (as reported by a beta tester), but quirks and other issues are to be expected with this prerelease.

  • RedGear v0.9.2 is beta quality software. Any open bugs listed in this and this bug tracker remain in v0.9.2. Users not desiring to deal with such bugs should wait until the v1.0 release.

  • The cost to license RedGear for HPC2000 is US$20 per individual user. However, if RedGear v1.0 (stable release) is not available to purchasers by November 1, 2008, then US$10 would be refunded. Anyone uncomfortable with this arrangement may wait until the full v1.0 release to purchase.

Thanks for release of RedGear beta. When I install RedGear on my Jornada 720 and make soft reset, computer during reset freeze. What's wrong, me or Jornada?

I had the same problem but it has nothing to do with redgear. Increase the amount of storage memory, that helped in my case.

This problem has been reported, but so far no one has been able to tell me what installed software causes it. Therefore it would be best to start with a fresh hard reset, install RedGear, and then start installing software until the problem appears, so that I can diagnose it.

If this is not possible, I would recommend clearing out any old "hacks" (except MFCCE301 and OLECE301, if they exist), which may have been used to get PocketPC programs running. RedGear is not supported when these hacks are present, and removing them will result in a more stable RedGear system.

Thanks, Kirk, for your tip. But problem was in initialisation of RedGear (HKLM\init\...). When was RedGear on the first position (Launch01), system froze, moving on the last position (Launch55) solve this problem.

Kirk, first of all many thanks for getting this going, its simply made my jornada useful again !

Opera 8.65. Yes i had a problem too. Installed Redgear & then opera (from cmonex's site). The whole thing stalled. I had to reset, all the batteries out & start again. This time i did it the other way around; first installed opera then redgear. Bingo it works !

Other programs i found working:

1. IM+ 4.58 for pocket PC; chat through MSN & Yahoo, no problems
2. some card games also meant for pocket pc

NOT working (yet ?): my Profimail 2.38 for pocket pc. It installs fine, but gives me an error message. I can't remember what exactly, but can post it later if anyone is interested.

In the case of Opera 8.65, the version on the site you reference is an older beta version and still contains many bugs. I'm also unsure whether it has been modified or not. Please see this forum post for instructions on obtaining the 8.65 release.

Installing Opera after RedGear works fine; the freeze is likely due to some other program that was installed. (Or, perhaps, the Opera 8.65 beta doesn't install properly. I don't test this since it's not a stable or latest release.)

I bought a ReadGear license but only found the compatibility layer for download. Is the ReadGear compatibility layer actually unavailable for download?

Purchases include free upgrades within the v1.x.x series of RedGear. (So yes, it is a free upgrade from 0.9.2 to 1.0.0.)
