Opera Mobile 8.65 runs without intervention under RedGear v0.9.2. However, the following tips will help you get the most out of your browsing experience:

  • The most recent release of v8.65 shows 0 days remaining in the trial upon starting. The cause is under investigation, but for now an older release of v8.65 provides the full 30 day trial. Users may wish to use the 30 day trial (rather than registering right away) while this issue is sorted out.

  • Some testers have reported a speed increase by using a text editor to edit \Application Data\Opera\opera.ini and removing the following line: JS Plugins=\Windows\opactivex.dll

  • Downloading files is temperamental. It is recommended that users continue to use Internet Explorer CE to download files at this time.

Yes, I noticed this annoying issue from the start.  It (the newer 8.65) starts once and  never starts again.

Also Opera dwonloaded by the link above gave me same problem on NEC 900c, it's started once and never again.

Instead on Jornada 720 tells me that the program it is not compatible with the version of operating system.

Anyone has a solution?

I have been trying getting Opera 8.65 working on jornada 720 but nothing to do.

I have installed from the link above it keeps on telling that is not compatible with my system (jornada 720) and when installed it says "could not locate Operalaunch or one of its dependencies".

Is it normal to get this message? Will it work with Redgear installed?

RedGear must be installed if you want to run Opera on a Jornada 72x. Opera 8.65 is also incompatible with 900C, a problem which RedGear for that platform would fix.

The whole point of RedGear is to get software (especially a decent browser like Opera) running on those older machines.

No, above I say "Opera Mobile 8.65 runs without intervention under RedGear v0.9.2." Thus you must have RedGear installed if you want it to work.

I was wondering if anyone else is having troubles with downloading opera? The first time worked without any difficulty. every time since my jornada stops in the middle of download or it completes with multiple missing files.

I don't know what I did wrong. I installed RedGear and the Redist. That went fine. I downloaded the version of Opera recommended on the Alpaxo forum site. I tried to install to my CF card, and got numerous installation errors in the process. Then the program would not start.

Then I tried to install to the program directory, got the same installation errors, and now my 720 is totally locked up. I can't even turn it off.

I know that plenty of other people have this program working great. I must have some massive incompatibility.

Definitely don't install RedGear to Storage Card. The files should still install to \Windows even if you select that, but it's still best not to do this. Also, Opera must be installed to main memory. (People have also noted this issue on their Windows Mobile phones.)

You could try uninstalling Opera and then deleting any traces of it in \Application Data, \Program Files\Opera, etc. and then installing it again. But at this point it may be easiest to hard reset, if that is possible; install the RedGear files and then Opera, all to main memory, and it should work directly.

Thanks for the reply. I did install RedGear and the Redist files to windows.

I did try to install Opera to the storage card and got all the installation errors. But then I uninstalled it. It's when I installed it to main memory that I got the same installation errors and the 720 locked up.

The installation errors were a succession of notifications of files that Opera could not install, and then it ended with "Opera was not successfully installed".

I can't think of any hacks I have installed. The only deep system change I can think of would be Geared's themes.

It sounds like there is not enough RAM available to install Opera to main memory. Although it is possible to adjust this, it is not advisable since Opera will need ample RAM for browsing. It is therefore recommended that you clean out your internal memory, perhaps moving some things to Storage Card. Removing any themes would also free up a few MB of space. Then try installing Opera again. Alternatively, you may want to read on Opera's forums for people's successes (or failures) in trying to install to Storage Card instead. (Note, you should check how much space you have left on your CompactFlash card; not having enough room could prompt the same error messages.)

Yeah, that's what it seems like. And I had so little memory left, I can't even boot now. I should have checked the memory situation before installing. Looks like a hard reset is required. Not such a big deal, because most of my stuff is installed on the CF card. I'm sure it will work great starting fresh. Thanks again.

To go to bed on a positive note - it's working now. I did a quick hard-reset, restored from by backup. I was able to install the Opera trial available from the Opera website to main memory. I do have the 30 day trial period. Yea!

I have been using opera and other programs without difficulty. This has made the jornada invaluable. Now that the opera trial period has expired what do I do interms of purchasing? What version? Looking for guidence.

Registering version 8.65 is fine. (The registration codes are the same since Opera 8.0.) Opera will provide you with a device ID in the registration dialog, which you enter into Opera's order form. They'll then email you a registration code.

Note that the device ID that Opera reports may change when RedGear 1.0 is released, but it is no problem; Opera says you can contact them to update your device ID and get a new registration code.

Hi everybody,
I have installed Redgear on my Jornada 720 and I got no problem. it works fine.

But I have experienced files download problem with Opera. Every time I attempt to download a file it crash giving me error and closing Opera. This doesn't happen with PIE.

Does everybody experienced the same issue? How to correct it?

I noted this problem you describe in the last bullet point of the original post. There is no fix currently available, other than to use IECE to download files, as mentioned.

I had opera trial version running and the version expired. Registered but can not get it opened to enter the code to open the program. I have tried unistalling and reinstalling and the same message appears but there is no way to access the area to enter the activation code.

Ah yes, this is fault of Opera Mobile. They claim it was fixed in the newer 8.65 (the WM2003 version available for download on their site). You could either try installing that version, or hard reset. I would try the former first.

So, basically, the version I have linked here is good for the 30-day trial. But if you don't register before the 30 days are up, then you will need to install the official 8.65 CAB for WM2003 from Opera's website and then it will let you enter the registration code.

Are we sure about this? My Opera demo is about to expire. I would rather wait a few more days before buying the full version, but not if I'm going to run into problems registering the demo on Opera's site.

Also, Kirk, do you anticipate being able to get downloading to work via Opera?

The instructions in this thread are now considered obsolete. Opera 8.65 is working 100% under RedGear 1.0.0.
