Topic: where to get?

Hi there,

I have problems installing my 3Com XJack Wifi Card on Jornada 720 and Jornada 728.
The driver is installed and listed correctly in the network devices promt. But the tool wich is bound to the driver shuts down with an error.

Where can I get your WLAN Monitor? I read something about it but can't find a download or something else.

Thanks for your help.

Daniel

Re: where to get?

The driver utility for Jornada 710/720/728 is custom developed by Alpaxo Software and sold together with the wireless card. If you already have such a 3CRWE62092B wireless card, you may purchase the driver utility separately for $10 at the link below.

Re: where to get?

I just found Alpaxo looking for wifi recommendations for Jornada 720.
Where should I go to the get  card / software package in one place?
thx, AA0HP

Re: where to get?

The cards show up on eBay from time to time; after purchasing a card, it is then possible to purchase the driver utility from this website. I used to sell a package, but no longer carry stock of the card itself.

Re: where to get?

Thanks for the clarification.  I found one quickly enough on ebay for about $15 pp.  After it arrived, I purchased your software license/download and had a go of installing it:

1) download WLAN monitor CAB file to mother PC software library.  (Also picked up 3Com's resources for possible future use, but not used here.)
1) full reset of Jornada 720 (both batteries out, recalibrate stylus, etc)
2) re-establish connection to mother PC, use ActiveSync 3.8 to copy WLAN monitor CAB file to Jornada desktop.
(not sure where to put it, I assume I can delete it after successful install.)
3) double-tap on WLAN CAB, just tap "ok" to a couple dialogs.
4) use little dot on left of keyboard to restart Jornada.
5) install 3Com card, extend antenna, watch green light blink.
6) try to find Jornada from mother PC (using Network Magic 4.9)

no joy on detecting 3Com/Jornada.  I also don't get the signal strength icon in the tray.
I also tried executing \Program Files\Wireless LAN\WLanMonitorCE directly but got classic, "Cannot find WLanMonitorCE or one of its components".

I need your guidance what to do next!
thanks, AA0HP

Re: where to get?

First of all, please be sure that you purchased the right model number (3CRWE62092B).

Next, download and save both installation packages ("3Com Wireless Drivers" and "WLAN Monitor Utility") from the link, which was provided in the email with subject "Your Alpaxo Software Customer ID."

There are then two ways to copy the software to the Jornada:

Choice 1) Copy the two CAB files you just downloaded onto a CompactFlash card; then insert it into the Jornada's CompactFlash door on the bottom.

Choice 2) Use ActiveSync (should have come with your Jornada) via serial cable, infrared, bluetooth, or network connection to copy the two CAB files you just downloaded to the device. ActiveSync has an "Explore" button in its toolbar which you may use to browse the device and copy files to it.

Once the files are accessible on the Jornada, double tap each file and follow the prompts (clicking OK) to install each CAB file. After both CAB files have been installed, you may now insert the wireless card into the Jornada. Follow the on-screen prompts to select the country, which will require a soft reset. You may bring up the wireless manager by double tapping the 5 bars icon in the tray in the lower right corner.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: where to get?

I missed the part about installing two CAB files.  That update went fine and I got to the point where I can configure the connection. I put in the following:
SSID = VICTORY_HEIGHTS
Channel = 9
Type = Ad-hoc
WEP = 128 bit, typed in my secret code
Index = 1

Then I try connecting and get a (reasonable) ID address and BSSID assigned. I have green check next to VICTORY_HEIGHTS Access Point.  Status = Associated, Rate = 11 Mbps
But the tray icon only shows one little red bar with bold color, even when I move within six feet (clear) to the wireless router.  I use Network Magic 4.9 to manage my network and, in contrast to other devices (laptops, Zune), it doesn't find the Jornada after several tries.

Just to confirm, the 3Com card is labeled: 11 Mbps Wireless Lan 3CRWE62092B on front,
(more numbers on back, not sure what you might be looking for to check that I have the right card.  M/N: SL-1110 ?)
Moving the antenna in and out does toggle the radio on/off message in WLAN monitor, as expected.

thanks again for your assistance,
AA0HP

Re: where to get?

Quick update: I note that trying to run application \Program Files\Wireless LAN\WLanMonitorCE only results in error message, "Cannot find WLanMonitorCE'  Maybe I need to be proactive in installing the softwares, not just click OK?

Re: where to get?

Just want to give an update that I got a chance to try my Jornada at an open WiFi network and demonstrated that it appeared to connect fine.  I got lots of signal bars and the little horizontal quality/signal graphs in WLAN looked right.  I wasn't able to touch any network resources, or get on the web but I am guessing that is because I don't know how that network is set up.

Back at home, I'm continuing to guess changes to various settings on Jornada and network, but no real progress yet.

Re: where to get?

Is Ad-Hoc the correct network type (meaning you don't have a wireless router)? If so, it will only ever show 1 bar of signal.

Normal wireless routers use the Infrastructure network type.

Re: where to get?

You're right; I am now using "infrastructure" (same as my other, connected computers).  I've tinkered with all the settings, hoping to get a good effect and wrote the previous earliler in the process.  One thing that puzzled me was on the DSL modem side: I tried turning WEP off but it also turned the wireless function off as well!  Maybe I needed to have rebooted the modem a couple of times to get it to "take".  At least turning WEP back on restored the wireless function so the other users could get back on...

Currently, when I try to connect the Jornada/3Com, I can find my network and get the messages, "joining" and "authenticating".  Would you what is being checked on the "authenticating" stage?

Note that under Network Identification, I have tried blanks (hoping I would get a dialog to fill in on-the-fly) and the username/password I use on the other computers.  I'm not sure what to put under "domain" since I am using Windows Workgroups.  I've tried it blank and with my workgroup name (what a long shot!).

Re: where to get?

Just a quick note (and I suppose I should be writing this through the tiny Jornada keyboard!) to let you know I just got my Jornada to connect to my home WLAN and the internet.  The final trick was to add the MAC address to the list of allowed entries on the ActionTec DSL model setup, even though I have MAC filtering off.

That is, I turned MAC filtering back on (in the modem setup screen), added the MAC address read from the back of the 3Com card into the list of allowed devices, and MAC filtering back off in the setup.  Then WLAN Monitor punched through the "authentication" step and connected fine!  I tested by using built-in IE to visit a couple web-pages and set up Pocket Outlook  POP3 account and sent a test email.

Glad you got it working!
